W. Heuer and Covid-19

Musikhaus W.Heuer

The Corona Virus (COVID-19) is having a major impact throughout the world and that includes the world of music teachers and piano owners.

Special care should be taken when using disinfectant products on a piano.

Viruses tend to last longer on plastic coated surfaces than on wood. For those of you with plastic keys, make sure you are extra vigilant when disinfecting your piano. The New England Journal of Medicine suggested in March that the virus is detectable for up to 24 hours on wood and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

In terms of making sure germs aren’t transferred, the best thing to do is always wash hands before playing, and also after. It’s a very good habit even outside of pandemics.

Initially clean the piano and piano keys with a damp cloth only. Finish off with dry cloth.

Do not spray sanitizer or disinfectant directly onto the keys.

Please note: Sanitizer should not be applied to the cabinet of the piano.

Wipe the keys before and after each pupil with a disposable wipe or disposable damp cloth. A few drops of “piano disinfectant” with an alcohol content of not more than 30% ethanol can be used. (to be applied to the cloth and not directly to the keys.)

High doses of alcohol must be avoided as it can in time lead to the key surfaces cracking or loosening from the wooden key..

When seated at the piano pupils and teachers must wear facemasks.

This cleaning is applicable to all acoustic and digital pianos and portable keyboards.
